There is no capable person present in the Congress to run the Silchar Municipality Board. This observation has been made by the opposition leader in the Board and the commissioner of ward no 23, Dilip Paul, while reacting to the question of water logging problem of the city that has made life miserable. Details here

Banning bandh is not a solution: Kabindra Purkayastha

BJP MP from Silchar Kabindra Purkayastha today said scanning of root cause is more important than banning bandh for a month in Assam. Purkayastha said ban was not panacea adding the important thing was to understand the root of the present crisis in Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD). Silchar under water, storm-water drainage scheme abandoned  

In the absence of a modern drainage facility, the nearly-3.5 lakh populace of Silchar is facing the worst ever waterlogging problem to have affected this second largest town of Assam.


Sources said a Rs 170.77-crore storm-water drainage scheme, the first of its kind in Assam, which was launched here in 2007, has failed to take off even five years later. 

But the scheme derailed after the NBCC abandoned the project alleging non-cooperation on the part of the state government. Details here

Amra Bangali condemned the recent attack on the Bengali speaking people of the State in the strife torn areas of BTAD.

Sadhan Purkayastha, general secretary of the organization said that antisocial and antinational elements are trying to break the unity of the people of the State. He said that the innocent people have regularly been attacked by the miscreants in Bodoland.

Cachar Paper Mill's future is in danger 

Since the Cachar Paper Mill, located at Panchgram of Hailakandi, 28 km from here, started commercial production from April 1988, it has been a mixed fortune for the management.

Except for profit during 2001-02 and 2003-04, it had been accumulating losses with huge stocks of paper lying indisposed, mainly due to competitive market price.

The management blamed the railways for not providing sufficient wagons for transportation of its necessary inputs from different destinations which was dismissed by the Centre.

NIT Silchar MBA Admission 2012-2013 details information 

“Learning by Doing” will be the sole motto of the MBA programme of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar, which was inaugurated on Tuesday.

In the first batch, 30 students have enrolled their names.

In his welcome note, Gurudas Das, head, Department of Management Studies, said the idea of starting MBA programme in a technical institute “lies on the realisation that addition of managerial skills to engineering students will be more effective.”

NIT Silchar to produce electricity from the kitchen wastes 

Deshpandey said the NIT was all set to produce electricity from the kitchen wastes. “Within a month, we will start work. Scientists from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre are coming to help us”, he said adding the NIT would have a solar powered campus shortly. The Cachar deputy commissioner also requested for the benefit of solar power to his establishment, he added.

It was way back in July 2009 that the foundation stone of cement grinding factory was laid by the Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, in the presence of Santosh Mohan Dev, the then Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Dinesh Prasad Goala, former Minister of PHE, and the officials of Cement Corporation of India at Kalain in Katigorah constituency of Cachar.

With waterways being operational between Kolkata and Silchar, it will open a new vista of development, not only for the land-locked Barak Valley, but also for Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur. It will bring about a surge in economic activities and create a conducive climate for investment and industrialization.


According to a Central Inland Water Transport Corporation (CIWTC) source, Barak and Kushiara rivers, upto a length of 121 km, will be declared as a national waterway soon. A Bill to this effect is pending in the Parliament.

During the conference of the Cachar Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sammelan (later re-christened by replacement of the word ‘Cachar’ by ‘Barak Upatyaka’), held on 8 and 9 January, 1977 in the District Library auditorium of Silchar, it was resolved that the organization (hereinafter mentioned as ‘Sammelan’) would always try to promote all – round developments of the Bengali language, culture and literature of the district of Cachar (hereinafter mentioned as ‘Barak Valley’). This objective finds mention in the constitution, which was drafted and adopted later. Keeping this objective in view, the Sammelan has been working consistently with sincerity and dedication for promoting researches in, and augmenting all-round developments of, the Bengali language, literature and culture of this region. Major efforts and key developments in these fields may be summed up here in a nutshell.

It is bounded on the North by North Cachar Hills districts of Assam, Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, on the South by Mizoram, on the East by Manipur and by Tripura and Sylhet district of Bangladesh on the west.

In addition to that, because of the vulnerable position of the Bengali-speaking people of Assam, the Sammelan has been acting as the sentinel for protection and preservation of the rights and status of the Bengali as well other minority languages.
