Friends and relatives of 25-year-old Pritam Bhattacharjee held a candelight vigil in his hometown Silchar in Assam on Thursday evening. This to demand justice for the engineer, whose dead body was found under mysterious circumstances, below a pedestrian bridge at a railway station in Bihar.

SILCHAR, July 18: Even after 5 days of the gruesome murder of Pritam Bhattacharjee by goons, Bihar police is clueless. Government railway police of the state continues to grope in darkness. Mukul Roy, Minister of Railways, facing barrage of criticism from different quarters for lack of security and safety of passengers, passes the buck on the State, maintaining that law and order is a state matter.

Silchar's Pritam Bhattacharji was a bright student who passed MSc from Gauhati University. When he was on the way to Delhi for admission PhD program in an university, some anti-social elements in Bihar killed him. Till now the Bihar police could not catch the culprits. We urge Government of Assam to wake-up and help Pritam's family.  

People of Assam and Pritam's family demands CBI inquiry into the incident.

In Silchar, Curfew in Kalain (Cachar) relaxed

Curfew was relaxed for two hours this morning at Kalain town in Cachar district of Assam where 22 persons got injured yesterday in clashes between members of two communities. 

The bandh had been called against alleged harassment of innocent people in the name of search operations to arrest those responsible for the assault on Congress MLA Rumi Nath and her second husband Jacky Zakir last Friday at a hotel in Karimganj.

The bandh supporters had also demanded action against Nath for bigamy as she had married Zakir allegedly without divorcing her first husband Rakesh Kumar Singh. Details here

Silchar is connected by road, rail and air to the rest of the country. It is connected by a meter gauge rail network to Lumding and Agartala which is currently being upgraded to broad gauge lines. The railway station is in Tarapur, Silchar. Regular bus services connect it with Guwahati, Shillong, Aizawl, Agartala and other places.

The airport is located at Kumbhirgram, about 22 km from Silchar and there are regular flights connecting Silchar with Kolkata, Guwahati, Tezpur, Agartala, Imphal.
