Ratul Krishna Endaw body recovered from a minibus

The body that was recovered from a minibus (AS 11-B 4750) at Sadarghat bus stand was identified by police as Ratul Krishna Endaw (27).

Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha of Cachar district, today expressed concern over inordinate delay in arresting the culprits involved in kidnapping of Mampi Nath alias Sangeeta Nath even after four months.

Death of a tea garden worker in Lala, Hailakandi district

Death of a tea garden labourer allegedly due to beating up by a neighbour today enraged the tea workers prompting minister Gautam Roy to intervene with an assurance to book the culprit soon.

According to reports, Ram Charan Tanti of Ramchandi out garden of Koya tea estate under Lala police station in Hailakandi district had borrowed Rs 800 from his neighbour, Jabar Uddin few months ago. As declared earlier, the Silchar Lumding Broadgauge Rupayan Sangram Committee of Hailakandi district unit today staged a protest demonstration infront of  the office of the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), demanding the early clearance of no objection certificate from the Forest Department of the State that has become a barrier in the construction work of Silchar Lumding broad gauge project.

The members of the committee shouted slogans against the apathy of the State Government towards Barak Valley. Later, the committee submitted a memorandum addressed to the Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain through the DFO in-charge.

Sushil Paul, district convener of the Sangram committee, Hailakandi, said that with the project kept pending for the last 16 years it is yet to see the light of the day.“The State Government has now intentionally held up the clearance order to make an obstacle in the construction work of the project,” he pointed out.

Taking a dig on the Tarun Gogoi led Congress government, Paul said that the government did not have any interest in the completion of the project, though it was declared a national project by the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, while laying the foundation stone of Jiribam-Tulup (Imphal) BG project in 2004. He suspected the involvement of strong syndicate which was active to scuttle it.

He pointed out that the Sangram Committee from its inception had taken series of protest programmes and would continue till the project turned out to be a reality. He said that Committee had recently visited the State of Tripura and met the intellectuals, prominent personalities and common people of the State to strengthen the support for the early completion of the project which would also benefit the people of the neighboring State. The delegation of Sangram committee during the visit also submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar, seeking his support and intervention in the completion of Silchar Lumding BG project.

Among others who spoke on the occasion included Bijit Bhattacharjee, eminent litterateur, Manas Kanti Das, Ranjit Ghosh, Afzal Hussain, Santosh Mazumder, Madhabi Sarmah.

Silchar Lumding Broadgauge Rupayan Sangram Committee today staged a protest before the district forest office of Karimganj, demanding the immediate release of no objection certificate from the forest department which has created barrier in the construction work of Silchar Lumding broad gauge project. In connection with their demands, the members of the committee further submitted a memorandum addressed to the forest minister Rockybul Hussain.

Arunangshu Bhattacharjee, district convener, Karimganj, said that the State Government had intentionally held up the no objection certificate which had created a barrier in the construction work of the project. “It was done intentionally to scuttle the project,” he rued. He said that no option was left to them but to launch a movement against this sort of apathy of the State Government towards the Valley.

In support of the demand, the Sangram Committee has chalked out a series of protest programme. According to it, the members of the organization would stage similar demonstration before the district forest offices of Hailakandi on Tuesday and in Silchar on Wednedsay. The members of the Committee from three districts of the Valley, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi would jointly gherao the forest conservator officer on October 3 in Silchar.

The committee was formed from the mass convention that was held on June 21, 2009 at Guru Charan College auditorium. Since then, the committee has been relentlessly fighting for the early completion of the project which was started 16 years ago. Details here

RSS, Bajrang Dal, VHP Chief may visit Barak Valley

Enthused by the success of August 27 Assam bandh by Bajrang Dal supported by VHP, top brass of Hindu outfits is actively considering to visit the Barak Valley.

According to an RSS spokesperson here, the leaders have planned to visit the valley in order to have an in-depth discussion on the burning issues with the frontline activists and workers with the sole objectives of unifying the Hindus.

As of now, the visits of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and VHP international president Dr Prabin Togadia have been on the agenda.

While RSS chief would be on a five-day visit, VHP international president’s itinerary was being finalised, he said. The proposed visits assumed significance in view of the BTAD violence, which exposed the ugly face of unabated influx in Assam, and the ‘vote-bank politics’ of Congress since independence. Pritam Kumar Das committed suicide

A postgraduate third year student of Paediatrics in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital was found dead in his hostel room on Monday evening.

Pritam Kumar Das, of Rajaali Tinsukia, had taken an overdose of sleep-inducing injections and committed suicide. According to sources, Pritam was suffering from depression after an obscene MMS featuring him, was circulated in the campus. The AIUDF has reacted strongly to BJP MLA Prasanta Phukan’s comments against AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal where the latter was quoted as calling Ajmal a “Bangladeshi”.

Strongly miffed with Phukan’s statements, AIUDF general secretary Hafiz Basir Ahmed Kasimi said in a press statement that the comments made by Phukan reflects the communal mindset of the party and shows him in a poor light.

“Ajmal had won elections from two constituency respectively in 2006 and he is now a responsible member of Parliament. To call such a person a Bangladeshi is not only unfortunate but also irresponsible,” he said. Details here

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who was on a tour to the Upper Assam districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, has demanded a thorough judicial inquiry into the allegation that the State Government had brokered peace during the National Games held in Guwahati in 2007, by paying Rs 15 crore to the ULFA. In a press meet held in Dibrugarh on Tuesday morning, Mahanta quoted the allegation made by retired Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), RN Ravi, that “an amount of Rs 15 crore was paid to the ULFA to buy peace”.

If a proposal mooted by the Women and Child Development Ministry is implemented, husbands could soon be legally mandated to pay a fixed monthly salary for their housewives for doing daily chores. Union Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Krishna Tirath said, “Government is mulling to bring a law under which a husband will have to legally pay a definite amount to his wife from his salary and the Ministry has started preparing a draft in this regard.” According to Krishna Tirath, the government has also planned to introduce the draft bill in the Parliament soon. The August 27 and the August 28 Assam bandhs called by the Bajrang Dal and the All Assam Students’ Union (AAMSU) respectively, may prove costly for these organizations, literally speaking.

The two Assam bandhs inflicted a blow on the State’s economy. Moreover, a lot of damage was caused during the violence that erupted during the August 28 bandh called by AAMSU and various other organizations. The government is now thinking of making the two organizations pay up for the damage caused to the State during the bandhs.
